MAS Freedom Urges Supporters to Contact Congressional Reps to Urging Support for Ending the Embargo on Gaza

WASHINGTON, D.C. (MASNET) Jan. 31, 2008 - MAS Freedom (MASF), as the civic and human rights advocacy entity of the Muslim American Society (MAS), in continuation of its efforts and the growing international campaign to end the cruel and inhumane Israeli embargo of Gaza, encourages all of our supporters to send this, or a similar letter (inserted below) to your member of Congress urging your member to call on the U.S. Secretary of State to demand that the siege of Gaza be immediately ended.

Further, we would like for all of our supporters to communicate our gratitude to the eleven courageous members of Congress who dared to say that the embargo of Gaza is not only cruel and collective punishment of a civilian population, but also illegal under the terms of the Geneva Convention of 1949 and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The letter of appreciation can be found here.

MAS Freedom will continue to monitor the situation in Gaza, in addition to calling for public education on the issues and humanitarian assistance for the victims of this economic blockade.

On January 23, 2008, eleven members of the U.S. House of Representatives sent a letter to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice demanding that the United States government hold the government of Israel responsible for lifting the economic blockade of the Gaza territory and for full respect of the human rights of its residents. The names of these members of Congress are listed below; a copy of their letter to Secretary Rice can be found here.

Further, the letter called for an end to the practice of collectively punishing the entire population of Gaza - some 1.4 million individuals - as a means of retaliation against Palestinian rocket attacks against Israeli border settlements.

Article 33 of the Fourth Geneva Convention bans the use of collective punishment measures against civilian populations.

Article 25 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights affirms the right of all people to an adequate standard of living.

The United States as a signatory to both international agreements, should not be aiding and abetting nation states that violate these laws.

Because of my support for the human rights of innocent civilians in Gaza, and my desire for peace and security for the people of both Gaza and Israel, I call on you, as a member of Congress, to send a similar communication to Secretary Rice and urge her to uphold the highest traditions of fairness and respect for the international human rights law that underpin our democratic and humane values as a nation.

I ask you to join with those eleven courageous members of our Congress, and with millions of conscientious and moral people around the world, and call for our nation to demand that Israel cease this cruel and humane embargo of the people of Gaza.

Palestine .. The land of the FORGOTTEN

To few, it is a DREAM .. To some, it is OPPRESSION .. To others, it is OCCUPATION .. To parts of the world, it is NOTHING .. To many, it is a land of CRIMES and TERRORISM ..

But,

To US, it is fight for JUSTICE .. To us, it is part of HUMANITY .. To us, it is INNOCENT children crying .. To us, it is young men and women with ambitious dreams .. To us, it is old men with wisdom and knowledge .. To us, it is strong women, mothers, sisters, daughters .. To us, it is a memory in our HEARTS and MINDS .. To us, it is HAPPY children running up the GREEN hills filled with joy and FREE of WORRY .. To us, it is the OLIVE trees that stand strong and FIRM, but now they're BURNING, and the sounds of laughter turned SILENT .. All what's heard are sounds of shovels burying another innocent SOUL .. To us, it is the right for noble country men to stand and fight for the right to EXIST, right to a land, RIGHT to an elected government, and right to CHOOSE ...
